Day 1: Arrival at Brive station and warm-up

As soon as you arrive at Brive station, Arnaud will welcome you with your bikes, equipped with panniers to load your luggage and your "box gaillarde". Responsible, solid and reusable, the box is 100% local, from its Brive-made container to the selection of local products it contains (apple juice from Lou Père Benoît, pâté with smoked duck breast from La Combe de Job, white beer from Brasserie Gaillarde, dark chocolate/nut spread from Bovetti, tea bag from Mlle Libellule, artisan soap from La Fabrique du Bois Vignaud).

A keen cyclist, Arnaud knows the paths, back roads and safe trails off the main roads like the back of his hand. He'll give you your travel diary and GPX tracks of the routes so you can discover the most beautiful nuggets of the destination in complete freedom. He'll give you all the advice you need to make the most of your stay and know who to meet on his behalf to get a real feel for the soul of the gaillards.

Make yourself comfortable at the hotel La Réserve***, located in the city centre less than 10 minutes from the station and equipped with a bicycle garage.

For lunch and dinner, opt for one of our fine restaurants, such as Amédélys, Chez Paulo or Inspyration: 3 committed chefs who fly the flag for Gaillarde gastronomy.

After lunch, head to the Tourist Office for a guided tour of the city centre (depending on the season), or discover it on your own using the Tèrra Aventura app, a fun treasure hunt that takes you off the beaten track to discover the city's sights. Bonus: climb to the top of the lighthouse at the Tourist Office and enjoy the panoramic view over the city!

Day 2: Heading south: Brive-la-Gaillarde → Ligneyrac → Collonges-la-Rouge → Turenne → Brive-la-Gaillarde

  • Distance: 54.9 km.
  • Recommended accommodation: Hôtel La Réserve 3*.
  • Recommended places for lunch: Le Maraîcher (Collonges-la-Rouge). Complimentary house aperitif on presentation of travel pack.
  • Recommended places for dinner: Amédélys (closed on Sundays and Mondays, free coffee), Chez Paulo (open every day; label Origine Corrèze), Inspyration (open on Fridays and Saturdays, by reservation; free hot drink at the end of the meal).

Leaving Brive, take the route des Plus Beaux Villages de France, with its breathtaking views, towards Collonges-la-Rouge. On the way, we recommend stopping off at the Moulin de la Vie Contée, in Ligneyrac: a century-old mill pampered by Anne and Cyrille, which presses walnuts (PDO recognised) as if it were still twenty years old. As a bonus, you can wander through the orchards and enjoy the unique view of the Château de Turenne.

When you arrive in Collonges, after exploring the village of red sandstone houses, knock on the door of Le Maraîcher restaurant for your lunch break: Antoine, a militant restaurateur and ambassador of the "circuit-court", grows his own 4-hectare organic vegetable garden. Just a stone's throw from the church in Collonges, you'll enjoy seasonal produce in an atmosphere that combines tradition and modernity.

Once you've had your fill, head back to Brive and stop off at Turenne, one of France's most beautiful villages, which has retained all its authenticity. Discover the Viscounty and its rocky outcrop, impossible to access by car. Along the way, don't hesitate to stop off at Lakopé, a group of local craftsmen who will be delighted to show you their skills. At the top, visit the castle and take the opportunity to climb to the top of the Tour César: you'll discover a breathtaking 360° panorama, unique in the region, which in a single glance embraces the Cantal mountains to the east, the landscapes of the Causse to the south and well beyond the Dordogne Valley to the west. The château's gardens will give you the chance to take a break in a green setting and a bubble out of time. Reduced admission on presentation of your travel pack.

Back in Brive for the evening, enjoy another fine meal based on seasonal and locally sourced produce. Special mention goes to Inspyration, recently awarded a Bib Gourmand for its sustainable and responsible cuisine!

Day 3: Culture and know-how: Brive-la-Gaillarde → Varetz → Saint-Viance → Ussac → Donzenac → Travassac

  • Distance: 40.2 km.
  • Recommended accommodation: Hôtel La Réserve 3*.
  • Recommended place for lunch: Picnic under the covered market in Donzenac
  • Possible refreshments along the way: artisanal bakeries in Varetz (Cousinou: closed on Mondays; Vignal: closed on Sundays), "Les Jardins de Lagarde" farm (St Viance; direct sales on Friday and Monday mornings), seasonal market gardening with crops grown in association, without harsh phytosanitary products), and "Ferme du Colombier" (Ussac, grocery shop with direct sales and a wide choice of local products/circuits courts: closed on Sundays).
  • In the village of Donzenac: Roig artisan bakery (open until 1.30pm, except Sunday 1pm, closed on Wednesdays), Boucherie Nauche (open until 12.30pm, closed on Wednesdays; label Origine Corrèze),
  • Recommended places to eat: / (end of stay)

After breakfast at the hotel, you set off for the Jardins de Colette in Varetz.

Beware of the traffic at the Ponts de Grange, 2 km before the Jardins de Colette: the bends and the slightly faster motorised traffic make it difficult to let yourself daydream while contemplating the landscape!

The Jardins de Colette retraces the life of the writer Colette, who stayed several times at the Château de Castel Novel, just next door to the Jardins, when she was living with Henri de Jouvenel. A strong, free, daring woman who loved nature and animals, Colette was a gaillarde before her time, and the Gardens are imbued with her avant-garde personality. The team of gardeners will be happy to share their responsible commitment with you: "zero phyto" gardens for many years, where waste is systematically recycled as mulch or compost, whereeco-pasturing is practised and where trees, shrubs and perennials are selected for their adaptation to the Correze climate and soil, and systematically purchased from local nurseries. As LPO refuges, the gardens also provide shelter for many birds, giving you the chance to make some really interesting encounters! Discount on admission on presentation of your travel pack.

Once you've regained your strength in the tearoom, get back on the bike and head for the Jardins de Lagarde in Saint-Viance, at a place called La Garde, then for La Ferme du Colombier at a place called Chaumont, in Ussac: Mesdames MURAT, a passionate market gardener, and CHAMBARET, a fruit and vegetable grower and breeder of cattle and pigs, will welcome you to their farm shop and advise you on the choice of local produce for your picnic lunch.

Once you're near Donzenac, there are two options for your lunch break: follow the Route du Rond and take the footbridge over the Maumont to reach a shady spot beside the stream, with its picnic area and tables available, or continue into the town centre and take a seat under the market hall, also equipped with tables and offering welcome shelter in case of rain.

In the early afternoon, continue your cycle tour of Donzenac, a medieval town dating back to the 12th century, where an interpretation trail takes you past the oldest house in Corrèze (13th century).

On leaving the village, stop off at the Pans de Travassac, a site that is unique in Europe: this open-air slate quarry is the last still in operation in France and the only one in Europe to have vertical rather than horizontal sections of rock, giving the place its very special atmosphere. A visit to the site will give you the chance to meet the craftsmen who work the slate every day, and to talk to these enthusiasts about their work and the added value of craftsmanship compared with the mechanised slate quarrying that is so prevalent today. Then you'll understand why Travassac slate was chosen for the roof renovation work on Mont-Saint-Michel! Discount on admission on presentation of your travel pack.

Your stay ends at the end of the day, after you have returned to the station and handed in your bikes to Arnaud. See you soon in Pays Gaillard!
