Brive has been a crossroads of the Corrèze since prehistoric times, and the town, which was founded in the 5th century around the shrine of Saint Martin the Spaniard, took advantage of this crossroads location to develop. A fortified town since at least the 12th century, it played on alliances with powerful neighbouring lords and reversed allegiances with France and the Duke of Aquitaine (King of England). A stroll through the streets will reveal fine Renaissance and classical architecture, and the collegiate church of Saint-Martin offers fine examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

The Commanderie de Mons in Varetz was occupied by the Knights Templar from the 12th to the early 14th century, then by the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Malta until the Revolution.
Having become a private estate following its sale as national property during the Revolution and having belonged to several families, the site was not open to visitors until 2023. Visiting the site is now an exceptional opportunity, following the new owner's authorisation to open it to the public.

Turenne, a small, peaceful village today, was first known in the 8th century when the troops of Pepin the Short attacked its castle. During the 10th century, it became the seat of a viscounty which, despite the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion (Viscount Henri I de la Tour d'Auvergne was one of the leading figures of the Protestant party), remained independent of the Kingdom of France until 1738. Discover this rich history as you wander through the streets of this iconic white limestone village, overlooked from the cliff top by the ruins of the castle.
