Pompadour, Corrèze's city of horses
Pompadour is famous for its Marquise (who never set foot there!), but also for being the "City of Horses". So saddle up, riders!
A national stud farm
Created under Louis XIV, the Haras de Pompadour became royal under the reign of Louis XV and then national in the 19th century. Today, it is part of the Institut Français du Cheval et de l'Équitation (French Horse and Riding Institute) and comprises the Château de Pompadour with its stables and the Orangerie riding school, as well as the mare farm on the Domaine de Chignac.
With over 160 events on offer every year, from equestrian cabarets to national and international equestrian competitions, you're bound to find something to entertain you.
The broodmare band, a nursery of excellence
You may not know it, but the Anglo-Arab horse breed is French and originated in... Pompadour! The Domaine de Chignac mare farm specialises in the breeding and conservation of this remarkable thoroughbred. A visit here is sure to reveal some exceptional animals, and perhaps some future champions.
Epic horse races
Not tempted to take the reins of a beautiful equine and ride through the Corrèze countryside? You can leave it to the professionals and sit back in the stands at the Pompadour racecourse, just across the road from the château.
Every year during the summer season, the Société des courses de Pompadour organises eleven days of horse racing, and has done so since 1837. These competitions regularly serve as a springboard for the best jockeys and horses on the international racing circuit. Place your bets!
