Well, we have to say something: Caesar never set foot in Allassac... We know you're disappointed. But don't go just yet: we promise you that this medieval tower is well worth a visit...

Here's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth: Caesar is not referring to the most famous Roman, named Julius, but to the word "Caesar", which means "suzerain". It's simple: Allassac was a fortified town, guarded by the bishops of Limoges, who were the famous overlords. In the heart of Allassac, a tower was erected in the Middle Ages to defend the town... In reality, it did very little to defend the town, as the bishops of Limoges paid ransoms to their enemies to avoid being besieged... Clever devils!

And this old lady is well preserved... We can even tell you her measurements: 30 metres high, 16 metres in circumference, 2.5 metres thick walls... She's not in danger of collapsing just yet! It is listed as a Historic Monument and is the only vestige of 17th century military art in the Limousin, and it's in Allassac! A superb renovation was carried out in 2002 to make it possible to visit it.

The tower's guardian will reveal all its secrets to you: you can visit in July and August from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm for the modest sum of €1.50, and what's more, anyone can climb it, even the youngest children, accompanied by an adult of course.

(Group visits by prior arrangement all year round).
