If you go to Chasteaux... don't forget to climb up there. Puy Lagar, or more commonly known as Montagne Pelée, is an imposing sight!

From here, a number of hiking trails invite you to discover its exceptional flora and fauna. There's also a delicate fragrance: rare orchids and other dried grasses are everywhere. A few holm oaks and junipers still stand here.

Climbing to Puy Lagar

Puy Lagar has to be earned, because to get there, there's no other way than to get on your bike or put your feet up.

From the charming hamlet of Soulier de Chasteaux, take the steep path listed in the hiking guide topos (yellow markings), a pretty climb in Gaillard that is well worth the diversions. Allow 30 minutes to reach the highest point (260 m). If you're less sporty or have shorter legs, we recommend you take the road towards the hamlet of Farges, where a car park is signposted on your left. From there, take the path between the low stone walls. And at the end of the path, keep your eyes peeled. There are no bears on the Causse here, but there is a magnificent view over Chasteaux.

A few tips for exploring Montagne Pelée

  • Don't forget your camera. View of Chasteaux, Le Soulier and the "organic" vineyards. The vines are grown on the steep hillsides of Chasteaux and Lissac. At the end of your walk, you can meet Didier Mouton, the passionate winegrower whose cellar is just a few kilometres away in Saint-Cernin-de-Larche.
  • Take the time to stroll through the hamlet of Soulier, with its waterfall and charming house waiting to be discovered. Continue on to the village of Chasteaux. From the porch of the church, there's a breathtaking view of the Causse lake.
  • For a walk at the end of the day, a blanket to lie on and wait for the sun to set, a picnic from the bag. So romantic!
