Terrase de Brive with young students.

Good student deals from Brive Tourisme

Brive-la-Gaillarde is already in the south! The gateway to the South, as we say back home. The accent is a bit lilting, the food is good, it's quiet and people like to party!

Admittedly, Brive isn't a major metropolis, but it does have a lot going for it when it comes to student life. Here, the pace of life is more relaxed and you benefit from a less stressful environment for your studies. What's more, the cost of living here is more affordable than in major French cities. In short, Brive has all the makings of a great city, and we'll tell you how to make the most of it:

Where can you go out as a student in Brive?

Pub crawls

Student life means student parties! Whether it's Thursday evenings or weekend parties, Brive's bars are the place to be for students. You only have to stroll past the terraces on Avenue de Paris to see that. And if you don't know the town well, Brive Tourisme has put together a selection of bars where you can party as a student.

Clubbing

Fancy a longer night out? In Brive, you can go to either La Charrette or Le Cardinal ("Cardi" for regulars). Two clubs, two atmospheres. The choice is yours. (Note that Cardi is reserved for over-22s and is closed on Mondays).

Our advice: don't forget to designate a Sam at the start of the evening. Otherwise you'll be walking home! And note that in Brive town centre, the lights go out between midnight and 5am.

Going to the cinema

Depending on your tastes, you'll prefer either the CGR Brive (a multiplex with 9 screens) or the REX (an arthouse cinema). And if you're a fan of medium-length films, the Festival du Moyen Métrage (medium-length film festival) takes place in Brive in April (with student card, preferential rate).

Follow the rugby team

In their black and white shirts, the CA Brive-Corrèze rugby team gives us a colourful experience. To understand it, you have to go to the stadium... For over a century, Brive-la-Gaillarde has loved rugby and supported its team with all its soul. Wait until you get a taste of it, and let yourself be carried away by the emotion and temperament of the people of Brive. Then you'll understand why rugby is one of the cornerstones of our country! Check out the calendar of home matches to choose your 1st date with the CAB!

Tip: buy your tickets on the day of the match at the ticket office, the ticket price will be cheaper.

And for us, parity counts: our Gaillardes team, French champions of Fédérale 1 in 2023, are now playing in Elite 2. We're looking forward to some great matches!

One thing's for sure: whether our CAB team is men's or women's, the 3rd half will be festive!

Brive: a sporting town!

With its 165 indoor and outdoor facilities, Brive is one of the most sporting towns in France! Betweenthe swimming pool (with its 1,500 m2 covered pool), the Amédée Domenech stadium, the ice rink and its regional and national competitions, which also hosts a hockey club that plays in the D3, the dojo and its martial arts and the many gyms that host handball, volleyball, basketball and badminton clubs, Brive is a town where you can't miss sport, whether you're a spectator or a player!

Outdoor activities

Looking for a breath of fresh air and a different way to discover the Gaillard region? Look no further than the Brive-la-Gaillarde region, where there's plenty to do! Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, swimming, climbing, canoeing... From Causses to hills, gorges to valleys, the Brive-la-Gaillarde playground is full of contrasts!

Looking for a thrill? The 5th largest via ferrata in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region is at Allassac, and you're free to go... If you want to hire the right equipment, you can do so at the Base Sports Loisirs Vézère.

Nature Evasion also offers a range of activities, including accrobranche (tree climbing) and paint ball.

Discover the Lac du Causse

If the sun's out, make the most of it and head for Lac du Causse: you can walk, run or mountain bike around it! The 6.9 km route will help you recover from a drunken evening or relax after a hard day's work! No time?

With canoe hire, rowing lessons and a mountain bike base, you can get the most out of Lac du Causse! And if you feel like taking it easy: chill out on the poplar beach, have a picnic in the shade of the poplars and cool off at the Bar du chemin before getting in a great game of pétanque (boules and jacks available).

Parc des Grottes de Saint Antoine

You can also get out into the countryside just a stone's throw from Brive town centre. The Grottes de Saint-Antoine park has no less than 5 hectares to explore. Here you can recharge your batteries, relax and even study!

The Voie verte

You don't have to go far to clear your head! Take the Voie Verte on foot or by bikeo.... This 17km route runs through Brive along the banks of the Corrèze.

There are also a number of play areas along the way, including a pump track and volleyball and basketball courts on the Ile du Roi.

Indoor activities

Maybe you'd like to plan an activity sheltered from the vagaries of the weather? In Brive, you can go bowling, ice skating, go to the swimming pool, plan a game of indoor football at the Complexe or a game of padel on one of the 5O'Padel courts!

And if you're more cerebral, try your luck in an escape game at the Gaillard Académie. Only your brain will help you solve the puzzles in time.

Tips for eating well as a student

In this section we won't be talking about the golden arch brand, because for us, eating is one of the greatest pleasures of our lives, and we'd rather share with you some of our top tips.

Shop and cook

Preparing your own meals is still the cheapest solution. Go to the market to get the best seasonal produce. You're in luck, as the Brive market has a great reputation. Try to get there before the producers pack up; you'll be able to take advantage of discounts and even freebies!

Supermarkets also offer inexpensive anti-gaspi baskets. Alternatively, you can use the Too Good To Go app, or our local Gaspifage app, which offer cheap surprise baskets.

Cheap restaurants

If you've had enough of cooking or are short of recipes, we suggest you try the daily special at Le Beauregard. Located just a stone's throw from the university campus, this restaurant, popular with lorry drivers, offers a full working-class menu that should fill you up and make a nice change from the university restaurant.

You can also indulge in the city centre without breaking the bank at Le Paris, Mon P'tit Paris (under the Halle Gaillarde), Pizzeria Rosi Trattoria (lunchtime menu for under €15 with pizza), Bistro Régent, Colombus, Fresh & Freeze... There's no shortage of restaurants to choose from, and it's hard to list them all. Our advice: filter our list of restaurants by selecting a price range. That way you can treat yourself without breaking the bank.

How do I get around the city?

You can easily get around the city on foot (and use the green lane), by bus (we recommend you visit the Libeo website for more information) or by bike. 90 self-service electric bikes are available at 19 hire points in Brive and the surrounding area.

Enjoy the city's events all year round

Brive comes alive all year round. You might as well make the most of it. One of the must-see events is the Foire du Livre (in November), where you can meet some of the biggest names in literature and comics, as well as a host of public figures. During the Christmas period, you can drink mulled wine at the foot of the Collégiale and listen to a concert at the gourmet market, while enjoying the city centre decorations and beautiful illuminations.

In April, the international medium-length film festival will give you the chance to see around sixty films over 6 days.

In June, at the Foires Franches, you can get your fill of thrills with ever more daring rides. This funfair is perfect for letting off steam in the middle of exam period! The festivities continue in June with the Fête de la musique. The whole of Brive town centre comes alive, with stages set up by the town council in the town's various squares and café terraces hosting artists.

Finally, in the summer, if you're lucky enough to still be with us, you're sure to become a festival-goer with the Brive Festival. The biggest names in today's music scene come together at the end of July (exceptionally on the weekend of 14 July in 2024).

Finding a job

If you are looking for a job during your year of study, we advise you to contact the city's"Higher Education and Training" department.

For summer jobs, a file will be put online in April. It will list job offers of which the town of Brive is aware.
