Vars-sur-Roseix, a charming little village built of red stone, has a rare speciality: a tasty plum that's easy to cook... Souillac too, but their plums are processed and it's brutal, but they haven't stopped making them because they don't make you go blind.

The Vars plum

You may know the village of Vars-sur-Roseix for its tasty plums. The first plum trees were planted after the Algerian war. Production took off in the 90s when a number of growers got together to grow this small fruit. A real organisation emerged, boosting sales and giving rise to a fine tradition of tree cultivation.

Like greengages, Vars plums are small, very fragrant but contain little juice. An ideal variety for cakes and pastries. You can find them on local markets during the summer, when they are harvested in July.

The old Souillac plum

But it's not just in Vars-sur-Roseix that you'll find these round fruits! Go as far as Souillac and you'll be able to taste plums in a different form...

As a drink, and more specifically as a brandy! It's not unusual to find this fruit as a digestif, but the Louis Roque distillery offers a very tasty spirit: La veille Prune. This eau de vie is matured slowly in oak barrels, giving it a delicious flavour and impeccable quality.

La veille Prune is also famous for its digestive properties. So you can sip it after a hearty meal.

Take a tour of the distillery to discover this local know-how, where you'll see the staff filling, waxing and labelling the bottles by hand.
