“The Unexpected” is the monologue of a young woman devastated by the death of her lover. She doesn’t want to believe he’s gone, and clings to the hope of his return, talking to him while he’s away. She lives holed up in her house: “I was twenty, and the world was four straight walls. Not moving, staying put, always loving you in the same place.”
