Marc Chadourne?s trip to Mexico in the early 1930s has nothing in common with those of today?s tourists. It also stands apart from the accounts of his time. In fact, the subtitle of his account of his stay in Mexico, “L’Indien sans plumes” (“The Featherless Indian”), although debatable, explains the direction of his investigation and his vision of the Mexican land: after almost three centuries of colonial exploitation and a century of chaotic independence, would the Revolution of 1910-1920 restore the central role of the indigenous populations?
