Oskar Matzerath, gifted with extraordinary intelligence, receives a tin drum as a present for his 3rd birthday, in the late 1920s, in the free city of Danzig. Disgusted by the adult world, which is contaminated by Nazi ideology, Oskar decides to stop growing up by deliberately letting himself fall from the top of a staircase. In this way, he preserves his childlike gaze, which, whenever he’s upset, translates into a drum roll and a shrill cry that has the power to shatter all glass objects around him.

The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Günter Grass, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 99.
