Sarlat: gastronomy and culture on the menu
The year is punctuated by major events, both gastronomic and cultural. Let yourself be seduced: Sarlat has everything you need to discover the charms of this medieval town in every season.
Truffle Festival and Foie Gras Culinary Academy
The wedding of Sarlat, truffles and foie gras takes place in mid-January on the Place de la Liberté. The programme includes cookery workshops, oenology courses, a culinary competition, a cavage session, tastings of the famous croustous (Sarlat tapas) and, of course, a truffle market. In the evening, a zany show is organised at the Centre Culturel. Bookings recommended!
Fest'oie on the 1st weekend in March
During the day, the streets of Sarlat are transformed into a mini-farm, with cookery workshops, farm visits, a foie gras market and tastings... In the evening, a large bodega with live bandas brings the medieval town to life. On Sunday, over 900 guests gather at the Cultural Centre and under the big top for a gargantuan banquet! Fourteen courses are on the menu, including all-you-can-eat goose foie gras, pâtés, rillettes, magret, confit and gizzards, as well as tasty dishes prepared by the region's top chefs... Try this culinary experience, which takes place in a warm, musical atmosphere.
Local produce days
Every year, on the Thursday and Friday of Ascension Day, the local produce days take place. It's an opportunity to discover or rediscover the diversity of products from the Périgord Noir: the first strawberries of the season, dried and processed walnuts (cakes, kernels, spreads, etc.), fatty poultry (goose, duck) and other delicatessen products. There's plenty of street entertainment and a farm right in the heart of the town for young and old to enjoy.
Theatre Games Festival
This festival, created in 1952, runs from late July to early August and offers a rich programme! The Place de la Liberté serves as a natural backdrop, transformed into a gigantic open-air stage. An eclectic programme, debates and carte blanche sessions for all audiences with well-known actors await you.
Taste and gastronomy days
Come along to Place de la Grande Rigaudie on the 4th weekend in September to celebrate pastoral lamb and Sarlat potatoes. There will be a market, cookery workshops, demonstrations, producers' stands, tastings and meals.
For early risers, a transhumance walk is organised from a nearby village, with gourmet breaks on offer.
Film Festival
The mediaeval town is the place to be for the 7th Art with this festival, one of the big names in the field, with a varied programme including official selections of short and feature films, a high school programme, lectures, etc. See you in mid-November.
Christmas in Sarlat
For three weeks, it's all about the magic of Christmas. Listed as one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in France, the medieval town can be proud! Street entertainment, 70 chalets, hot chestnuts and Christmas beer, an XXL ice rink... the Christmas spirit reigns here.
Bon plan The wedding of Sarlat and truffles
In Sarlat, you're bound to fall under the spell of an ancient town like no other. If you're there in mid-January, you're bound to fall under the spell of the truffle, which is celebrated over a weekend. A huge truffle market, truffle croustous tastings, cavage demonstrations (truffle hunting with a dog), culinary courses... It's all about truffles. Well, not quite, because foie gras, its best friend, is also on the menu.
