Halle Brassens and the covered market
Why does the market hall bear the name Georges-Brassens?
It's a question often asked at the Tourist Office reception desk. The great Georges Brassens and his moustache, in his song Hécatombe, recalls a fight at the Brive-la-Gaillarde market that went badly wrong. A bad memory of his time in Brive? Looking for a rhyme with "Gaillarde"? But Georges only came to Brive once, and that was long before he wrote his song...
" Everything here is good and makes you want to cook ".
These were the words of Luana Belmondo when she discovered this incredible display of gourmet flavours.
It's 7am... Brive is waking up. Whatever the weather, producers and other street vendors are starting to set up shop. The market is gradually taking shape. A palette of colours and flavours mingles.
More than 200 of them set up shop in the Place de la Guierle, the covered market and under the Halle Brassens, inaugurated in 1982, where you'll mainly find producers of ducks, geese and fattened capons in winter, and a few other farmyard poultry throughout the year.
Under the covered market, a host of local producers, cabbages, carrot fans, radishes, tomatoes, live poultry and spring plants....
This market is a real meeting place for food artisans. All you want to do is wander down the aisles, stocking up on cheese, pork products, fresh fruit and vegetables picked the day before. In short, everything you need to make your mouth water!
Tip Treat yourself at Brive market!
" Isn't my milhassou beautiful? And my purple mustard? If the gastronomy of the Gascony region holds any mysteries for you, the Brive summer market is the place to discover its secrets. Here, you'll be able to feast your eyes on the stalls and cut the fat with the small local producers. To finish off, don't be a fool and try a slice of foie gras or a magret served in one of the restaurants set up around the market.
