Less well known than PDO or DOC, but just as remarkable...

Have you heard of the PGI?

This official European acronym was created in 1992 and stands for Protected Geographical Indication.
As its name suggests, it identifies an agricultural product, raw or processed, whose quality, reputation or other characteristics are linked to its geographical origin. The PGI is linked to know-how and local traditions. It may be based on the product's reputation or public recognition.

To obtain a PGI, certain rules must be respected. They are set out in a specification and are subject to controls.

There are 126 PGIs for agri-food products in France. 74 for wines and 2 for ciders.
