Chapelle du Saillant avec vitraux de Marc Chagall
VOUTEZAC
The Chapelle du Saillant is the only chapel in France to be entirely decorated with stained glass by Marc Chagall. Fascinated by the artist?s work, Guy de Lasteyrie du Saillant, a descendant of the chapel?s builders, commissioned this work.
The six panels were created between 1978 and 1982 by stained-glass painters Charles Marq and Brigitte Simon in Reims, based on models by Chagall, who added the finishing touches, including numerous effects on the grisaille.
The stained-glass windows evoke man’s primary values in nature. The artist played with light, creating a dialogue between the colored windows and the grisaille windows. Behind the altar, “Creation”: the stained glass depicts a simple landscape where water, earth and air are illuminated by the fire of the Creator Spirit. Two bunches of multicolored flowers bloom like fireworks in the rose
