The traditional tour of Brive town centre takes in the collegiate church of Saint Martin. A brief history and a few words about the archaeological crypt are given.
But this monument deserves special attention and a dedicated tour. That's why the Tourist Office's heritage guides are offering a full analysis of its architecture, decoration, construction details and evolution.
This collegiate church, the beating heart of Brive town centre, is both a reflection of history since the Vᶱ century and the most visible architectural monument on the horizon, and its walls, even its mysteries, are not necessarily well known to Brivistes.
From floor to ceiling, its stones hide stories in History, between the sarcophagi, its lapidary marks, capitals, modillions and stained glass windows.
Price: €8 per person. Information and bookings 05 55 24 08 80 or at the lighthouse.
The result of the skills of medieval builders, this monument also reflects the great urban epics of Briva Curetia (The Bridge over the Corrèze) in the Vᶱ century, the Romanesque period of the XIIᶱ century, the Gothic period of the XIVᶱ century, the XIXᶱ century with the consequences of the Revolution and finally the archaeological finds of the XXᶱ century.
All these traces evoke the life of a distant past, its beliefs, its customs through the life of the monks of St Augustine, the importance of relics and craftsmen in the service of religious power translating in their productions the lights of an era unjustly judged dark. All you need to do is discover the reliquaries and the secrets of the Frankish masons, faithful companions of the brazier, which comes from local quarries right down to the slates on its roof.
