History of the Foire Franches de Brive

Brive's free trade fairs go back a long way: a letter of patent from King Louis XV dated 6 June 1768 endorsed the request from the people of Brive to hold a free trade fair on 17, 18 and 19 June on the Guierle. Later, in 1905, an article in the newspaper La Croix de la Corrèze reported that more than 140 wagons were needed to transport 7,500 visitors to the fairs!

Today, after more than 250 years of existence, the fairs remain one of the high points in the life of our town, but the merry-go-rounds have replaced the wool and cattle merchants!
